Recently, I had to use a hard drive from a laptop I gave to my mother, to get a client up and running again. The laptop had XP installed and was the same model, and I needed it right away. So like any tech would do, I pulled the drive out and hot swapped it, fired up the lappy with the problems and off they went. Now moms, needs an OS. However I did not have a copy of windows, as I personally have not used it other than to put on client machines, and they purchased thier copies. Since this is a DELL all i would need was an OEM disk, I did not have that either. So I told her I would put LINUX on it and she would love it.
I grabbed my Knoppix cd-rom and followed the instructions found at http://www.freenet.org.nz/misc/knoppix-install.html (thanks alot for this David). I know there are MANY more howtos on this subject out there, but this one was easy to follow, and right at the top of the Google search.
Anyhow after installing and setting it up with her account, there was not much other configuration needed. Really, I mean the NDIS Wrapper worked right on boot, and the UI was beautiful.
So for those of you out there that are looking for a quick setup of a fast 'get your teeth dirty' linux install, with no muss, beyond any that I have seen so far (yes even k/u/x/edbuntu) this made it go.
Personally (thanks to Jason Huebel) I am a gentoo user, have been tried and true, but damn, for 10 minutes of work, to get my MOM to use *NIX, this was perfect!
